Service Description
Domain Name Services (DNS) serve as the Internet's analog to a phone book. DNS servers hold a structured directory of domain names (such as blinn.edu) and convert these into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (like 137.207.71.196). This conversion is essential because, while domain names are user-friendly, computers utilize IP addresses to access websites. Additionally, DNS offers a reverse lookup capability, enabling the mapping of IP addresses back to their associated domain names.
Beyond IP addresses, prevalent DNS record types include SMTP mail exchangers (MX), name servers (NS), pointers for reverse DNS lookups (PTR), and domain name aliases (CNAME). The IT Network Team is available to assist with any additions, removals, or modifications to the Blinn College Domain Name Service (DNS).
