Overview
You can create a Sway presentation from a Word document either directly within Microsoft Word (for Microsoft 365 subscribers) or by importing the file from the Sway homepage. Sway will use your Word document's headings to automatically structure the presentation into sections (called "cards").
Step by Step Guide
Method 1: Transform from within Word
This method is available for Microsoft 365 subscribers and transforms your document into a new Sway webpage.
Prepare your document: For best results, use standard Word formatting such as titles, Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on. Sway uses these to create the structure of your presentation.
Sign in to Microsoft 365: Ensure you are signed in to your Microsoft account in the Word application.
Initiate Transform: Go to the File tab, select Export (or just Transform in some versions of Word for the web), and then choose Transform to Web Page.
Choose a style: A sidebar will open on the right, displaying various design styles. You can preview how your document will look in different styles.
Transform: Select your desired style and click Transform. A new browser tab will open with your new Sway presentation.
Method 2: Import from the Sway Homepage
You can also import a document directly from the Sway website.
Go to Sway: Sign in to your account at sway.office.com.
Select Import: On the "My Sways" screen, click the Import button.
Upload your file: In the file dialog box, navigate to your Word document, select it, and click Open.
Sway processes the file: Sway will import the content, which may take some time depending on the file's size and complexity.
Review the result: Once imported, your content will appear on the Sway Storyline, where you can further edit and customize the design.
Next Steps (After Import/Transform)
Once the content is in Sway, you can refine your presentation:
Edit Content: Go to the Storyline to add, remove, or rearrange content cards.
Change Design: Click on the Design tab to change the overall look, layout (vertical, horizontal, or slideshow), and color schemes. You can also click Remix! to let Sway automatically apply a new, random style.
Add Media: Use the + icon to insert additional images, videos, audio clips, or even embed other documents.
Share: Use the Share button in the top right to generate a link for your audience to view the presentation.
