Overview
Security protocols in Outlook may prevent you from mailing attachments with sensitive information such as social security numbers (SSNs). In order to send these documents, you will need to encrypt the email.
Step by Step Guide
Send an Encrypted Email
Outlook has encryption built in. Here is how to turn it on and then use it with select emails.
1. Compose a New Email: Open a new message in New Outlook.
2. Go to Options: Click the Options tab or the Shield icon in the message window.
3. Select Encrypt: Click the Encrypt button (padlock icon).
4. Encrypt-Only: Encrypts the message so only intended recipients with the right key can read it.
5. Do Not Forward: Encrypts and prevents forwarding, copying, or printing.

6. If the recipient’s email is on an Exchange server, Microsoft will authenticate them to unencrypt the email from their address that way. If they are not on an Exchange server, the system will send them a verification code to confirm their identity before unencrypting.
