Identifying the Ethernet Port Number on a Wall Plate

Overview

When you request installation, activation, or repair of a wired (ethernet) port, you may need to provide the port number on the wall plate.  This guide below will help you locate your Wall Jack and identify the port number, which is typically printed on a label attached to the wall plate itself.

Step by Step Guide

Understanding the Terms

  • Port ID or Port Number: These designations refer to the unique identifier located on the wall outlet to which your network cable is connected. They may also be known as port number, network ID, network label, or wall port ID.
  • Wall Plate: This term describes the actual surface fixture on the wall that accommodates the connection for your network or telephone cable.

Locate the Wall Plate

To find your Wall Plate, trace the network cable extending from your phone, docking station, or computer to the wall jack. The image below illustrates a standard network jack with a plugged-in network cable.

Record the Port Number

Examine the wall plate where the network cable is connected for a labeled designation. This label is typically located at the top or bottom of the faceplate corresponding to your connection.

In the example above, the port number would be either 38-1 or 22-2.  Provide this number to the network technician or include it in the details when submitting a service request.
