Overview
There are several ways to forward an email as an attachment in Outlook, depending on whether you are using the desktop app, Outlook on the web, or the mobile app. The simplest methods are to use the "Forward as attachment" option or to drag and drop the email into a new message.
Step by Step Guide
In the Outlook desktop application (Windows)
Method 1: Use the "Forward as attachment" button
- In your mail list, select the email you want to forward. You do not need to open it.
- On the Home tab in the Ribbon, go to the Respond group.
- Click the More menu (indicated by three dots or an arrow) and choose Forward as Attachment.
- A new email message will open with your original email attached as a .eml file.
Method 2: Drag and drop
- Open a new email message. You may need to have your Outlook mailbox and the new email window visible side-by-side.
- Find the email you want to attach in your mail list.
- Click and drag the email from the mail list directly into the body of your new email message.
In Outlook on the web
Method 1: Use the "Forward as attachment" option
- Select the email you want to forward, but do not open it.
- In the reading pane, click the More actions menu (three dots) and select Other reply actions > Forward as attachment.
- A new email window will appear with the original email attached.
Method 2: Drag and drop
- Click New message to start a new email.
- Find the email you want to attach in your mail list.
- Click and drag the email from the mail list into the body of the new email message.
In Outlook for Mac
Method 1: Right-click menu
- Right-click the email you want to forward as an attachment.
- In the pop-up menu, click Forward Special > As Attachment.
- A new message will open with the original email attached.
Method 2: Drag and drop
- Create a new message.
- Drag the email from your mail list into the body of the new message.
In the Outlook Mobile App
The "Forward as attachment" feature is not available in the Outlook mobile app for iOS or Android. As a workaround, you can:
- Reply or forward the email normally.
- Copy the content of the original email and paste it into a new message.
