🚨 Facilities Emergencies

When something serious happens on campus related to buildings, utilities, or infrastructure, it’s important to know who to call and what counts as a true Facilities Emergency.

⚠️

For any fire, medical, or criminal emergency, call 911 immediately.
Facilities staff cannot respond to life-threatening situations or active criminal activity. Emergency responders must be contacted first.

Facilities Office Hours

Facilities staff are on site and available during normal business hours for routine issues and most maintenance requests.

Regular Hours

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During these hours, non-emergency issues should be submitted through the standard Facilities work order system.

What Is a Facilities Emergency?

Facilities Emergency – Working Definition

A Facilities Emergency is a condition related to a building, utility, or system that requires immediate attention because waiting could:

  • Put people’s health or safety at risk,
  • Cause significant damage to college property, or
  • Seriously disrupt normal college operations or activities.

Situations that are inconvenient or uncomfortable, but not dangerous or damaging, are generally not considered emergencies and should be reported as regular maintenance requests.

Examples of Facilities Emergencies May Include:

  • Major water leaks or flooding that cannot be contained
  • Overflowing restrooms or sewage backups
  • Complete power loss in a building or major area
  • Broken exterior doors or locks that prevent a building from being secured
  • Strong burning smells, sparking outlets, or electrical hazards
  • HVAC failures that create unsafe conditions (extreme heat or cold)
  • Hazardous material concerns (e.g., chemical spills)

Examples That Are Usually Not Emergencies:

  • Individual room being slightly too hot or too cold
  • Single light bulb out in a room or hallway
  • Minor drips or leaks that can be contained with a small bucket
  • Non-urgent repairs that do not affect safety or building security

These issues should still be reported, but they can go through the normal work order process.

After-Hours Emergencies and On-Call Staff

Facilities maintains on-call staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to genuine Facilities Emergencies that occur outside normal business hours.

If you believe you are experiencing a Facilities Emergency, call the appropriate number for your campus:

🏫 Brenham, Sealy, Schulenburg & Waller Campuses

Emergency Facilities Line: 979-830-4466

🏙️ Bryan & RELLIS Campuses

Emergency Facilities Line: 979-209-7373

When you call, be prepared to provide your name, a callback number, the exact location of the problem, and a brief description of what is happening (for example: “Major water leak in the first-floor hallway, Building A”).

When in Doubt, Call

If you’re not sure whether a situation is a Facilities Emergency, it is always better to ask. Call the appropriate campus emergency Facilities number, and the on-call staff member will help determine whether immediate response is required or if the issue can be handled through a normal work order.
