What is spam?
Spam refers to unsolicited bulk email that is sent indiscriminately, primarily for commercial purposes. A significant portion of this is transmitted via botnets, which are networks comprised of computers infected with viruses, making the identification of spammers more challenging. Various estimates suggest that approximately 80% of all global email traffic consists of spam.
What is phishing?
Phishing is a fraudulent tactic used to deceive individuals into revealing their usernames, passwords, credit card details, and other sensitive personal information. Phishing attempts often manifest as emails that prompt recipients to click on links directing them to counterfeit websites. These communications frequently masquerade as messages from reputable entities, including banks, PayPal, Amazon, or academic institutions like Blinn College.
It is imperative that you do not respond to any email requesting your personal information. Blinn College will never solicit personal information through email correspondence.
To report a phishing email in Outlook
Select the email and then use the Report Message button on the Home tab (or the Report dropdown on the ribbon), choosing Phishing. After confirming the report, the email will be moved to your Junk folder, and a copy will be sent to Blinn College Security Services for analysis to help improve their spam filters.
